Life form: Tree
Comments: Acer palmatum is native to Japan and Korea. They are relatively slow-growing trees and usually stay small (up to 6 metres). The branches of the Japanese maple are thin, smooth, shiny brownish-green and later red in colour. Its leaves are palmate and not larger than 10 cm. They are often deeply divided with sharply pointed lobes (5-9). The leaf margin is finely serrated. The leaf colour varies greatly, for example purple-red or light-green with dark-green veins. Budding leaves in spring are completely different in colour than later in the year. The tiny brown-red flowers grow in cymes and appear in April/May. The winged samaras are shiny and usually red-brown in colour.
